WHY OMAHA ?
Moscow, August 1991
During 3 days military forces occupy the center of Moscow in an attempt of coup d'état against Gorbatchov's reforms and opening of the country. Civilians spontaneously take the streets, talk to the soldiers and try to convince them to step back (even by offering them hamburgers from the newly opened MC Donalds...). Finally and with the help of Yeltsin the coup failed and putschists were jailed (but in later years rehabilitated...).
STOP THE WAR 2022 !
Plastic in our waters threatens our ecosystem and is one of the main environmental issues of our times.
I present my found objects from the shores of the Mediterranean as vivid creatures and in a friendly way, but defenitely want to draw attention to this universal problem!
POSTPHOTOGRAPHIC MOMENTS (2017-2021)
My experimenting and messing around with the panorama function of an Iphone started back in 2017. I was absolutely fascinated by the possibility of light-painting with daylight! and its unpredictible outcome. Now, a few years later this practice is labeled and goes by the hashtag of #panoglitch. I for myself prefer calling these images postphotographic moments.
Saurópolis - Pioneer use of a mobile phone camera (2005/06)
The streets of Poblenou / BCN. A rather poetic view of a barrio in transformation. Images made with a Nokia N90 (2MP) mobile-phone camera which produce a kind of pictorial quality and a lot of "grain". It was very exciting at the time to print those photographs big size (up to 2m) and use them for my book project Saurópolis. This has not been done before, there was definitely new ground to explore.
BCN FASHION BEACH - Barcelona Beaches 2007/08
Summer beaches of Barcelona present a symphony of chaos and colors and my intention was to add a touch of poetry and humor to it. Always riding a fine line between intimacy and exhibitonism. It was my definite step into digital photography, using a rather long lens (180mm) on a reflex camera this time (in order to form noticably part of the scene).
WHAT'S TRUE - Painting with light (1999-2000)
On my trips on assignment I used to take some time off when ever possible to explore cityscape scenarios at dawn. I was looking for unexpected results by doing long exposures and camera movements. Keep in mind that at those times you only saw the results when the slides got delivered from the lab, which always was an exciting moment. Original work on color slides.
Inside Poblenou - Arxiu Fotogràfic de Barcelona 2017/18
Inside views of a barrio during its transformation from industrial to hi-tech. It's a follow-up of "Saurópolis", but this time in a more documentary approach, photographing from within.
QUIXOTE XXI - la Mancha revisited (2002/03)
Visiting la Mancha to take photographs in a Quixote state of mind, using a small and outdated bakelite camera from the 50's. On the lookout of protagonists of the all time classic by Cervantes. Original works are on color negatives.
SCARY [STONE] FACES - (2011-13)
Volcanic rocks meet the walking dead. A visual correspondence between two independant series. All that we see or seem ist just a dream within a dream (Edgar Allan Poe). Digital photography.
On the road
In the hills of Jamaica, 1980
In summer 1980 I left Switzerland for an extensive trip first to Florida, then a few Caribbean Islands and finally South America, in fact with no other desire than sensing a taste of real life, different from what I had experienced so far in Europe. Without much planning and just a short time after having enjoyed an amazing Bob Marley concert at the Hallenstadion in Zurich I found myself in midst of sugar cane plants in some lost hills of rural Jamaica, the island that Bob's music has brought into worldwide spotlight. I was lucky enough to enjoy the company of a Caribbean grandma and her grandson for some 2-3 days (or say some timeless time). As a funny detail and proof for this timeless feeling you can see my Swiss chronometer wrapped around the boy's arm.
